One of the best ways to be close to the race is to volunteer. This allows you to truly be on the inside of the race, only racing as part of one of the invited teams would get you closer.
The stage 3 from Chickamauga to Chattanooga, TN still requires plenty of volunteers to help out as course marshalls, in hospitality, communication or security.
